I like the variety of tasks

Paul Franke is a third-year apprentice at Hermes Fulfilment, one of Germany's largest logistics companies, and talks about a typical working day.

Paul, what's the first thing you do when you arrive at work?
When I start my shift at 05:30 in the morning - that's early, but you quickly get used to it - I park my car and put on my work shoes. Then I go through the turnstile into my area and log in to the time recording system. Then I'm allocated to my work area.

What are your typical daily tasks?
Overall, the tasks are very varied and diverse, as I am deployed in different work areas. For example, in goods receiving, goods storage or order picking. Picking involves taking the right items from the warehouse so that customers actually get what they have ordered.

What technical equipment do you work with every day?
A device for recording store floor data, modern computers and handheld scanners.

How and where do you spend your breaks?
Mostly with my colleagues eating together in the canteen.

How does a typical working day end for you?
With a chat with my colleagues, who finish work with me.

What do you like best about your apprenticeship so far?
That I get an insight into almost all areas of logistics and work with lots of different people. The working atmosphere here is very relaxed. I also like the fact that I have many opportunities for further training once I have completed my apprenticeship.

In Haldensleben, trainees can take advantage of many benefits - which ones do you use?
I use the staff discounts to buy things more cheaply - for example at the DIY store or Otto Versand. I also get a gym allowance and, of course, discounted meals in the canteen.

What are your plans for the future?
I would like to successfully complete my third year of training and finish my apprenticeship with a good result. And then I would like to stay with Hermes Fulfilment. I'm open to whatever the future holds for me here.
